We all experience wonderful moments and difficult ones. Often, even behind the joyful experiences, we feel fear at the same time. Not fear as a result of danger from the outside, but fear that comes from the inside. We feel fear that the joy won’t last, that we don’t deserve it, that things outside of our control will take what we desire away, or some other reason, making our joy incomplete. We think that we overcome fear by resisting it, not realizing that resistance only makes it stronger. Fear has the power to hold us back, to create a barrier between us and our desires, dreams, or the people we love whose love we desire the most. So how might we transform this emotion that can vastly impact the quality of the life we live? How about befriending our fear instead of resisting it?
In order to befriend someone, we need to know them deeply and we need to equip ourselves with the qualities that are needed for that relationship to thrive. If we know our fear deeply, it might not have as much control over us. And if we equip ourselves with the qualities needed, we can condition ourselves to overcome this emotion daily so it demands less effort from us to handle it.
When I think back about my past, I realize that my life would be drastically different if I didn’t take jobs that I thought I wasn’t qualified for because of fear of failure. I wouldn’t have experienced the deep love that I have in my current relationships if I wasn’t willing to take the risk of being hurt. I wouldn’t be living in America and pursuing my dreams if I was too afraid of leaving my comfort zone and the home I grew up in. I needed to love all of those dreams and desires so much that I am willing to befriend the toughout emotions to get to where I want to be. I realized that conditioning my mind and body allowed me to tap into more power within me to go towards my dream destination. Fear is an emotion and emotions can be transformed either through the mind or through the body.
Body Habits:
- Strengthen Your Body Everyday: One of the most effective ways to transform our emotions, such as fear, is through motion. Whenever you find yourself afraid, move your body either through exercise, walks, a cold shower, dance or whatever helps change the stagnant energy within.
- Breathing Practices: Research shows that breathing helps strengthen our ability to regulate emotions, decrease anxiety and increase optimism. Breath is linked to our autonomic nervous system and daily breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system which is associated with resting leading to a more peaceful mind and body.
- Power Poses: Our body poses create our emotions so we need to pay attention to our postures to feed our body with strength and resilience. Holding a “Wonder Woman” pose for 2 minutes leads to a significant increase in testosterone, a significant decrease in cortisol hormone, a higher pain threshold, better abstract thinking, and more risk tolerance.
- Do something that is beyond your comfort zone everyday to condition your mind and body to overcome the emotion of fear.
- Feed your body what helps you overcome anxiety such as fatty fish, brazil nuts, vitamin D, dark chocolate, turmeric, chamomile, and green tea.
Mind Habits:
- Feed Your mind daily: Habits are what create us and shape our psychology. Leaders are readers so make sure you read or listen for at least 30 minutes daily to something that feeds your mind and helps you grow.
- Observe your thoughts daily: Focus creates our reality, and the brain doesn’t know the difference between what you imagine and what we actually experience and that is why Fear is labeled as False Evidence Appearing Real. We need to cultivate a growth mindset that compels us to move forward and see the opportunity in all situations.
- Find a role model who has overcome their challenges and fear: We are all born with the same capabilities, but we lead vastly different lives. We need to have people in our life that motivate us to grow and be creators, not just consumers.
- Focus on the solution instead of the problem: Often our imagination of failure holds us back to justify our fear. This powerful tool of imagination needs to be used to our advantage to focus on the scenarios we desire instead.
- Affirmations and visual meditation: These can be powerful ways to rewire our brain to focus on the outcome and the solution we desire the most.
Finally:
Power Of Community: It is often said that we are the summary of the top five people we spend the most time with and that is why it is important to select our peer group. In order to grow, I invite you to put yourself in an environment that forces you to grow and learn from your circle.
We all experience the emotion of fear and that is not necessarily what hinders us in life. It is how we handle that emotion that does. I wish you all the qualities that can help you transform this emotion into strength and resilience so you may live your truth. The world needs the gifts that you only have.
